The publication of the arcade in the United States of America was entrusted to Data East. Versions for the PC Engine and Sega Mega Drive consoles were released in 1990. The game features a two-dimensional perspective with a side view, thus with the volleyball players only able to move forward and backwards, then a novelty in arcade volleyball.

The arcade was successful, but above all the PC Engine conversion was highly appreciated by the critics of its time; it also received a "gold medal" for game of the month from Zzap! magazine, and features even smoother animation than the arcade version according to Video Games Guide.

Super Volleyball is the progenitor of a series of volleyball games with the same kind of perspective, continued with Power Spikes, Power Spikes II and Hyper V-Ball.
