Zombie Nation is a side-scrolling shooter game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1990 by Meldac. Originally released in Japan as Abarenbō Tengu, the game was later modified and localized for the North American market.

Storyline

Set in a dystopian future, Zombie Nation takes place in the year 1999, when a mysterious alien entity known as Darc Seed crashes into the United States. Using its powerful magnetic rays, Darc Seed turns the nation’s population into zombies and brings the Statue of Liberty to life under its control.

Players take on the role of Namakubi, a gigantic disembodied samurai head from Japan, who must fly across America to defeat Darc Seed, rescue the remaining survivors, and reclaim a legendary samurai sword capable of destroying the alien menace.

Gameplay

Zombie Nation is a unique take on the shoot ‘em up genre. Instead of controlling a spaceship or a traditional warrior, players control the floating samurai head, which shoots energy projectiles and uses destructive breath attacks to obliterate enemies, buildings, and obstacles in its path.

The game features:

  • Four levels set in different locations across the U.S.
  • Mass destruction mechanics, allowing players to destroy city landscapes while battling enemies.
  • Upgradable weapons, collected by rescuing hostages.
  • Challenging bosses, including mutated creatures, cyborgs, and alien-controlled war machines.

Reception & Legacy

While Zombie Nation gained a cult following, it was often remembered for its bizarre concept, over-the-top destruction, and unique protagonist. Despite its flaws, the game stood out among other NES shooters and remains a curiosity among retro gaming enthusiasts today.
